Nirvana, Nyet or Ni Hao? New site aims to make multicultural welcomes easier for all

What does Nirvana really mean? How can you cater for Jewish visitors? What Russian superstitions do you need to know about? The answers to all these questions and more can be found on www.multicultural.co.uk. The new website aims to make it easier for anyone working in the industry to be more welcoming to their colleagues and guests from different backgrounds. Users can learn about welcoming visitors from China, India and Russia as well as getting an overview of five important faiths - Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.

Within the tourism industry visitors and staff come from many different backgrounds so it’s not surprising that misunderstandings sometimes happen. What people do and say is based on hidden values, assumptions, beliefs, traditions and backgrounds hidden just under the surface.

The website is part of a broader initiative funded by the London Development Agency as part of its hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism skills development programme. The site doesn't cover every faith, community or country but is hopefully a step in the right direction. It also includes helpful information about promoting to people from different backgrounds and gives other sources of useful advice. An accompanying handbook and CD-Rom will shortly be available to London-based tourism and hospitality businesses.

The site has been developed by The Tourism Network, a not-for-profit company offering no- nonsense and practical training, consultancy, and publications for the tourism industry. For further details please contact Susan Briggs on 01765 365591.
